  19. Since we are on this topic.  My full-time job is
  20. embedded systems design and we are currently developing
  21. a PCI ATM card.
  22. What is interesting about PCI mother-boards is that
  23. many boards do NOT follow PCI2.0 compliance.
  24. We have tested over 7 different PCI boards and out
  25. of the 7, 3 boards do not support burst modes (and no there
  26. was no BIOS setting to enable it).
  27. 2 that did support burst modes, did so for only 2 or 3 cycles.
  28. Our NIC card was to do burst for at least 10 cycles.
  29. I have a PVR, but I don't know if bursting is 
  30. important to it - I know bus mastering is.
  31. I have not had the chance to put the PVR in our test beds -
  32. but since my PVR at home is working great, I don't really
  33. see the need.
  34. BUT, just to let you know that just because it is a PCI
  35. mother-board - doesn't not mean they designed to be
  36. completely 2.0 compliant.
  37. Most of the boards that were found to be 'less PCI' were
  38. Taiwan clones - no names.
  39. But the Triton, Zappa, Endeavor on Dells, Gateways - these
  40. are the really good boards we have seen.
  41. This is one reason why Intel has it own mother-boards.
  42. The requirements of PCI was just too strict for some
  43. manufactures that Intel was worried that their PCI chipset
  44. was going on really bad mother-boards.
  45. But these days, this maybe old news since I
  46. believe the clones and brandnames do have PCI
  47. MB design down pat.  Unless you buy an old board.
